Notes

Bladdernut (Staphylea trifolia) is a shrub for borders, specimen planting, and rain gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full sun to full shade and dry to moist soil of most types. It grows into a large, suckering shrub with drooping clusters of cream, bell-shaped flowers. The fruit is a three-chambered bladder that changes from green to yellow to brown. Bees and butterflies visit the blooms.

Pairs well with Sensitive fern, Black gum, and Aromatic aster.
