This site collects as little as possible. Here is what it collects, why, and what you can do about it.

Who runs this site

Select-A-Plant is run by 1337376 B.C. Ltd., a British Columbia company. The company is responsible for the personal information this site collects.

What we collect

This site has no sign-up forms and no accounts. When you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you write.

When you use the hardiness zone lookup, we send the ZIP code, postal code, or town you type to outside services to find your zone. These are phzmapi.org, Zippopotam.us, OpenStreetMap, and Open-Meteo. We send the place you typed, not your name or IP address.

Our hosting provider records standard server logs, such as IP addresses and the pages you request. These keep the site running and help stop abuse.

Cloudflare Web Analytics counts visits for us. It sets no cookies and does not track you across other sites.

We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages people read. It sets cookies in your browser and sends usage data to Google.

We also use Ahrefs Web Analytics to count visits. It sets no cookies and stores no IP addresses.

The fonts on this site load from Google Fonts. Your browser contacts Google to fetch them, which shares your IP address with Google.

Why we collect it

We use your details to reply to you. We use visit counts to see what is useful and to fix what is not. We do not sell personal information. We do not use it for targeted advertising.

Who else handles it

A few companies handle information on our behalf. Cloudflare hosts this site. Google provides analytics and fonts. Ahrefs provides visit counts. The zone lookup services above receive the place you type. Our email provider stores the messages we receive. Most of these companies are based in the United States, so your information may be stored or processed there and be subject to United States law.

How long we keep it

We keep messages for up to two years after our last contact with you. Business and tax records are kept for seven years, because tax law requires it. Google Analytics keeps visit data for up to 14 months. Server logs are kept for a short time and then deleted.

How we protect it

We limit who can see your information. We use accounts protected by strong passwords and two-step sign-in. The site runs over a secure connection (HTTPS).

Your choices

You can ask to see the personal information we hold about you. You can ask us to correct it or delete it. You can withdraw your consent at any time. We answer within 30 days.

You can block Google Analytics cookies in your browser settings or with Google's opt-out browser add-on. The site still works without them.

If you live in the United States

We do not sell or share personal information for targeted advertising. We run no ad trackers, so there is nothing to opt out of. If that changes, we will add a "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" link to every page.

Depending on your state, you may have the right to know what we collect, to get a copy, to correct it, and to have it deleted. To use these rights, email us. We answer within 45 days. We will not treat you differently for asking.

How to make a complaint

If you have a concern, please tell our privacy officer first. We will look into it and reply in writing.

If you are not happy with our answer, you can complain to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia at oipc.bc.ca.
