Notes
Ostrich fern (Onoclea struthiopteris) is a fern for borders, rain gardens, and naturalized areas. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes part sun to full shade and average to wet, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. It spreads by underground rhizomes to form lush colonies, so give it room and keep it out of small spaces. It sits low on the menu for deer and rabbits. The shorter fertile fronds form a beaded plume that lasts through winter.
Pairs well with Swamp milkweed, Meadowsweet, and Invincibelle Ruby smooth hydrangea.
Native range
Europe, eastern Asia, and eastern North America.
