California flannelbush (Fremontodendron californicum) is a shrub for borders, hedges, and xeriscape. It is hardy to USDA zone 8, or down to 10°F (-12°C). This plant likes full sun to part shade and dry to average, sandy or loamy soil. The large yellow flowers open one at a time in showy masses. The leaves are olive-green and felted. Deer usually look elsewhere for a meal.
