Notes

Fiveleaf akebia (Akebia quinata) is a vine for borders, ground cover, and low maintenance gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full sun to full shade and dry to moist soil of most types. It twines as it climbs and grows fast. The spring flowers smell like chocolate and vanilla. It is not a favorite of deer, though hungry deer will eat almost anything.

Pairs well with Siebold's hosta, Weigela, and Cinnamon fern.

Native range

Japan, China, and Korea.
