Notes

Indian hemp (Apocynum cannabinum) is a perennial for pollinator gardens and meadows. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full sun to part shade and dry to moist, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. Small cream-colored flowers cluster at the branch ends, and butterflies and bees visit them. It spreads fast and can become a serious weed, so plant it only in large areas.

Pairs well with Brown-eyed Susan, Switchgrass, and Virginia rose.

Native range

Northeastern United States and Canada.
