Notes

Salal (Gaultheria shallon) is a shrub for shade gardens, ground cover, borders, and food gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 6, or down to -10°F (-23°C). This plant likes full sun to full shade and dry to wet, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. Spring flowers hang like tiny white to pale pink bells. Sweet blue-black berries follow, and you can eat them. Deer rarely make it their first choice.

Pairs well with Western sword fern, American maidenhair fern, Pacific bleeding heart, and Madrone.
