Notes

Western sword fern (Polystichum munitum) is a fern for shade gardens, woodland areas, borders, and ground cover. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes part sun to full shade and dry to moist soil of most types. Deer rarely make it their first choice. The dark green fronds stay evergreen and form a large clump. It is drought tolerant once established, and it looks best planted in groups or drifts.

Pairs well with Siberian bugloss, Blue wood aster, and White spruce.

Native range

Central America, South America, and Panamá.
