Notes

Small anise tree (Illicium parviflorum) is a shrub for hedges, privacy screens, shade gardens, and foundation plantings. It is hardy to USDA zone 7, or down to 0°F (-18°C). This plant likes part sun to full shade and dry to wet, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. The olive-green evergreen leaves differ from the dark green of most broadleaf evergreens. It can form suckering drifts if left alone, so give it room. It is not a favorite of deer, though hungry deer will eat almost anything.

Pairs well with Oakleaf hydrangea, Lenten rose, and Mondo grass.
