Notes

Smoothstem blazingstar (Mentzelia laevicaulis) is an annual for low maintenance gardens. This plant likes full sun and dry, sandy or loamy soil. It forms a low mound of rough, gray-green leaves in its first year. Dozens of large, yellow, starry flowers open on branching stalks from late afternoon until early morning. Bees and butterflies visit the blooms. The barbed leaf hairs cling to fabric, so plant it away from paths.

Pairs well with Golden crownbeard, Winecup clarkia, and Red fescue.
