Notes

Voodoo lily (Sauromatum venosum) is a bulb for woodland gardens, shade borders, and curiosity plantings. It is hardy to USDA zone 6, or down to -10°F (-23°C). This plant likes part sun and dry soil. In spring, a narrow flower stalk unfurls to show an inside patterned in violet and yellow. Mottled green and black stems and leaves follow in summer. Choose a spot that stays dry over winter.

Pairs well with Allegheny spurge, Ebony spleenwort, and Glory-of-the-snow.

Native range

Himalaya and India.
