Notes

May-apple (Podophyllum pleianthum) is a perennial for shade gardens, woodlands, borders, and naturalized areas. It is hardy to USDA zone 6, or down to -10°F (-23°C). This plant likes part sun to full shade and average to moist soil. Maroon red flowers open in early to late spring. It is not a favorite of deer, though hungry deer will eat almost anything. The plant grows 18 to 24 inches tall and 9 to 18 inches wide, and its flowers are fragrant.

Pairs well with Lungwort, Woodland phlox, Lady fern, and Japanese forest grass.
