paintbrush

Notes

Paintbrush (Haemanthus albiflos) is a bulb for pots, containers, and part shade gardens. It grows outdoors year-round in USDA zone 9 and warmer, down to about 20°F (-7°C). In colder areas, grow it as a houseplant or bring it indoors for winter. This plant likes part sun. Its thick, leathery leaves stay green all year. White flower heads with yellow stamens look like little paint brushes and open in late summer or fall.

Pairs well with Chinese money plant, Snake's head, and Japanese forest grass.

Native range

South Africa (Karoo Mountain, Agulhas Plain, and and Southeast).
