Notes

Pignut hickory (Carya glabra) is a tree for pollinator gardens and low maintenance landscapes. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes full sun to full shade and dry to moist soil of most types. It grows slowly and has a large taproot, so it is hard to transplant. Songbirds and small mammals visit it, and it hosts some moths. Deer rarely make it their first choice.

Pairs well with Black oak, Red twig dogwood, Sourwood, and Indian grass.
