Notes

Pride of madeira (Echium candicans) is a shrub for borders, low-maintenance gardens, and naturalized plantings. It grows outdoors year-round in USDA zone 9 and warmer, down to about 20°F (-7°C). In colder areas, grow it as a houseplant or bring it indoors for winter. This plant likes full sun and dry to average, sandy, loamy, or chalky soil. Bluish purple to white flowers appear in spring and again in summer, and they draw butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees. Deer tend to browse other plants first. It tolerates drought and salt, so it suits coastal beds.

Pairs well with Blanket flower, Big bluestem, and Calamint.
