screw pine

Notes

Screw pine (Pandanus amaryllifolius) is a tropical evergreen for containers, tropical gardens, and kitchen use. It grows outdoors year-round in USDA zone 9 and warmer, down to about 20°F (-7°C). In colder areas, grow it as a houseplant or bring it indoors for winter. This plant likes full or part sun. Its long, strappy leaves smell floral, sweet, and vanilla-like. Cooks in southeast Asia prize the leaves for rice dishes, soups, stews, and curries.

Pairs well with Quick Fire panicle hydrangea, Blue jasmine, and Snowdrop.
