Notes

Seaside alder (Alnus maritima) is a tree for specimen planting, rain gardens, and naturalized areas. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full sun to part shade and average to wet, loamy or clay soil. It can grow as a small tree with a straight trunk and narrow, rounded crown, or as a much-branched shrub. Yellow flowers open in autumn, and birds visit the tree.

Pairs well with River birch, Cardinal flower, and Big bluestem.
