Notes

Alder (Alnus mayrii) is a tree for shade gardens and rain gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full or part sun and average to wet soil. It blooms in early spring with yellowish-brown male catkins and purple female ones. The tree grows 30 to 50 feet tall and spreads 20 to 40 feet wide, so give it plenty of room.

Pairs well with River birch, Joe-pyeweed, Cinnamon fern, and Bottlebrush buckeye.
