Notes

Swamp aster (Symphyotrichum puniceum) is a perennial for rain gardens and naturalized areas. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full sun to part shade and average to wet soil. It grows 72 to 84 inches tall and has bristly, purplish stems. Light-violet to violet-blue petals surround a yellow center in mid to late summer and again in autumn. Butterflies visit the flowers.

Pairs well with Swamp milkweed, Pickerel weed, and Royal fern.
