Notes
Tree cholla (Cylindropuntia imbricata) is a succulent for borders, hedges, and xeriscape gardens, and it needs little care. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes full sun to part shade and dry, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. Violet flowers open on stout branches and are followed by knobbly fruits that stay on the plant for many months. Deer and rabbits usually look elsewhere for a meal. Wear thick gloves when you work near it, because the spines are sharp.
Pairs well with Sideoats grass, Soaptree yucca, Golden crownbeard, and Blue grama.
