Notes
Broad beech fern (Phegopteris hexagonoptera) is a fern for shade gardens, woodlands, and naturalized areas. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes part sun to full shade and average to wet, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. Its bright-green fronds are twice-pinnate and broadly triangular. It spreads rapidly, so give it room. It dies back when it gets too much sun.
Pairs well with Toad lily, Lungwort, and Aureola Japanese forest grass.
Native range
Eastern North America.
