Notes

Butter nut (Juglans cinerea) is a tree for food gardens, pollinator gardens, and shade gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full sun and average to moist soil of most types. It grows 40 to 60 feet tall with a wide, open crown, and the butternuts turn rancid soon after they mature, so harvest them quickly. Rabbits tend to pass it by. Bees and birds visit it.

Pairs well with White oak, Bunchberry, White trillium, and Switchgrass.
