Notes

Eastern hop hornbeam (Ostrya virginiana) is a tree for specimen planting, woodland gardens, and low maintenance landscapes. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full sun to full shade and dry to moist, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. It sits low on the menu for deer. It grows slowly and develops a broader crown in sun. Songbirds and small mammals find some food value in it, but it does not tolerate flooding or salt.

Pairs well with Sensitive fern, Western sword fern, American cranberrybush, and Pussytoes.

Native range

Eastern North America and Mexico.
