Notes

Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) is a tree for shade, wildlife gardens, and large landscapes. It is hardy to USDA zone 2, or down to -50°F (-46°C). This plant likes full sun to full shade and dry to moist, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. Birds relish the sweetish fruits, including quail, pheasants, woodpeckers, and cedar waxwings. The crown is broad and often erratic, and older bark has corky projections.

Pairs well with Red pine, Nannyberry viburnum, Woods rose, and Red fescue.

Central and northeastern North America.
