Notes

Hornbeam (Carpinus cordata) is a tree for specimen planting, hedges, privacy screens, and low maintenance gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes full sun to full shade, average moisture, and sandy, loamy, or clay soil. It grows slowly into a dense tree, so give it room to reach its full size. Green flowers open in early to late spring.

Pairs well with Japanese forest grass, Autumn fern, and Fragrant Bouquet hosta.

Native range

Japan, northeastern China, Korea, and Russia.
