Notes

Oriental hornbeam (Carpinus orientalis) is a tree for specimen planting, hedges, and privacy screens, and it needs little upkeep. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes full sun to full shade and average to moist, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. It grows slowly into a dense tree that reaches 15 to 25 feet tall. Green flowers open from early to late spring, and the tree tolerates drought.

Pairs well with Virginia sweetspire, Green Velvet buxus, Stained Glass hosta, and Greig's tulip.
