Notes

Russet buffaloberry (Shepherdia canadensis) is a shrub for rock gardens, native gardens, and xeriscapes. It is hardy to USDA zone 1, or down to -60°F (-51°C). This plant likes full sun to full shade and dry to moist soil. It grows well in poor soils because it works with nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Plants are dioecious, so you need both male and female plants for fruit set. Bees visit the small yellow flowers.

Pairs well with Prickly wild rose, Rocky mountain juniper, and American aspen.
