Notes

American aspen (Populus tremuloides) is a tree for naturalized plantings. It is hardy to USDA zone 1, or down to -60°F (-51°C). This plant likes full sun to full shade and dry to wet soil of most types. Its small, shiny leaves quiver in the slightest breeze on flattened leafstalks. Silvery catkins appear before the leaves, and fall color is bright yellow. It spreads fast by root suckers, so give it room.

Pairs well with Prickly wild rose, Russet buffaloberry, and Rocky mountain juniper.

Native range

Canada to Mexico.
