Notes

'St. Louis' Indian grass (Sorghastrum nutans 'St. Louis') is a grass for pollinator gardens, rain gardens, and naturalized areas. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full sun and dry to moist, clay soil. It forms a clumping mound that grows 48 to 72 inches tall, and light brown blooms in early to late autumn attract butterflies, bees, and birds. It is not a favorite of deer, though hungry deer will eat almost anything. Fall color adds interest to the clump.

Pairs well with Black-eyed Susan, Prairie dropseed, and Royal fern.
