Notes

'Black Velvet' delphinium (Delphinium elatum 'Black Velvet') is a perennial. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun. Dense spikes of frilly, purple, semi-double flowers with near black centers open from early to late summer and attract hummingbirds and bees. Deer usually look elsewhere for a meal. Cut off spent spikes to get another round of blooms on side spikes late in the season.

Pairs well with Alexander Fleming peony, Campfire rose, and Kentucky bluegrass.
