Notes

'Blackhawks' big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii 'Blackhawks') is a grass for borders, rain gardens, winter interest, and naturalized plantings. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full sun and dry to wet soil of most types. The leaves emerge deep green with a purple flush in spring, then turn burgundy-black by late summer and fall. Burgundy red flower plumes appear late in the season. Deer rarely make it their first choice.

Pairs well with Gooseneck loosestrife, Ring of Fire sunflower, and Common snowberry.
