Notes

Cascara buckthorn (Frangula purshiana) is a shrub for hedges, woodland gardens, and low maintenance planting. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full sun to full shade and average to moist, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. It can grow as a large shrub or a small tree with a short trunk. Songbirds eat the berries, and so do bears, raccoons, and other mammals. If you cut the plant down, several sprouts grow from the stump.

Pairs well with Vine maple, Dwarf serviceberry, and Salal.
