Notes

'Checkmate' rose (Rosa 'Checkmate') is a climbing shrub for borders, cottage gardens, and specimen planting. It is hardy to USDA zone 6, or down to -10°F (-23°C). This plant likes full sun and loamy or clay soil. The red blend flowers are fragrant and attract bees. The canes are a bit stiff, so train it on a pillar, wall, or fence rather than an arch or pergola. Robbie Tucker bred it in 2002.

Pairs well with The President clematis, Fountain grass, and Star Gazer lily.
