Notes

'Chief Wapello' peony (Paeonia lactiflora 'Chief Wapello') is a perennial for borders, cut flowers, and perennial beds. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and loamy soil. Willis J. Smith bred it as a seedling of 'Adolphe Rousseau'. The fragrant, bright red double blooms open in early to mid spring on tall, heavy stems that stand erect.

Pairs well with Siberian iris, Tickseed, Cinnamon fern, and Pink Impression tulip.
