Notes

Black walnut (Juglans nigra) is a tree for shade gardens, woodland, and food gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full sun to part shade and dry to wet soil of most types. Tomatoes and apples do not survive near mature trees. It is not a favorite of rabbits, though hungry rabbits will eat almost anything. Gather the nuts early, before squirrels and other wildlife can consume them.

Pairs well with American elm, Solomon's seal, and Virginia creeper.

Native range

North America, District of Columbia, New Jersey, and Rhode I..
