Notes

'Cully' river birch (Betula nigra 'Cully') is a tree for specimen planting, winter interest, and rain gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full or part sun and dry to wet, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. It is not a favorite of deer, though hungry deer will eat almost anything. It grows fast and forms several trunks. Brown male and green female flowers open from early to late spring, and butterflies and birds visit the tree.

Pairs well with Red twig dogwood, Cinnamon fern, and Switchgrass.
