Notes

'Genie' magnolia (Magnolia 'Genie') is a tree for specimen planting, containers, borders, and foundation beds. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes full or part sun and average to moist, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. Deep purple buds look almost black and open to burgundy, tulip-shaped blooms with a light scent. Flowers appear from early spring to early summer, and bees, butterflies, and birds visit them. It stays compact, so it suits city gardens.

Pairs well with Japanese forest grass, Golden Tiara hosta, and Autumn fern.
