Notes

Heartleaf skullcap (Scutellaria ovata) is a perennial for borders, pollinator gardens, and cottage gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full sun to full shade and dry to moist, sandy or loamy soil. Blue violet flowers open on spikes that look like salvia, and butterflies sip their nectar. It spreads by underground roots, so give it room. It sits low on the menu for deer and rabbits.

Pairs well with Lanceleaf coreopsis, Standing Ovation little bluestem, and Arrowwood viburnum.
