Notes

Japanese quince (Chaenomeles japonica) is a shrub for borders, cottage gardens, and specimen planting. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes full or part sun and dry to wet soil of most types. Orange-scarlet fragrant flowers open in early to late spring and draw bees and birds. Deer and rabbits tend to pass it by. It is drought tolerant, so it needs little care once settled.

Pairs well with Pink Lemonade blueberry, Feverfew, and Stargazer lily.

Native range

Japan and South Korea.
