Notes
'Merlot' coneflower (Echinacea purpurea 'Merlot') is a perennial for borders, cottage gardens, pollinator gardens, and cut flower use. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun and dry to moist soil of most types. Rose pink petals surround an orange-bronze center disk, and butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, and birds visit the blooms. It sits low on the menu for deer. Plants grow fast and stay upright.
Pairs well with Little bluestem, Moonshine yarrow, and Nodding onion.
