Notes

Scarlet rose mallow (Hibiscus coccineus) is a perennial for borders, rain gardens, meadows, and accent planting. It is hardy to USDA zone 6, or down to -10°F (-23°C). This plant likes full or part sun and average to wet, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. The deep scarlet flowers are over 6 inches wide, and clumps flower over a long period in late summer. It is not a favorite of deer, though hungry deer will eat almost anything. Butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees visit the blooms.

Pairs well with Swamp milkweed, Culver’s root, and Karl Foerster feather reed grass.
