Notes

'Smbtj' Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii 'Smbtj') is a shrub for pollinator gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full or part sun and dry to moist, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. It blooms from early to late spring and attracts bees and birds. Deer tend to browse other plants first. The dense shrub grows at a moderate rate and tolerates drought and salt.

Pairs well with Monsieur Jules Elie peony, Switchgrass, and Purple Prince zinnia.
