Deer tend to pass it by. It forms thick, leathery, dark green evergreen mounds with red flowers in late winter and early spring. In zone 4, give it a winter mulch of fallen leaves or good snow cover.

Pairs well with Star magnolia, Grape hyacinth, and Ostrich fern.
