Notes

Staghorn sumac (Rhus typhina) is a shrub for borders, hedges, winter interest, and woodland gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full sun to full shade and dry to moist soil of most types. Female plants make fuzzy red berries that last through winter and feed many birds. It forms thickets, so give it room. It is not a favorite of rabbits, though hungry rabbits will eat almost anything.

Pairs well with Witch hazel, Switchgrass, and Little bluestem.
