Notes

'Varen' paper birch (Betula papyrifera 'Varen') is a tree for specimen plantings, accents, winter interest, and rain gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 2, or down to -50°F (-46°C). This plant likes full or part sun and average to wet, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. It grows fast and forms a multi-stemmed shape. Catkins and green female flowers open in spring, and bees and butterflies visit them. Deer tend to pass it by.

Pairs well with American arborvitae, Yellow marsh marigold, Blue bead lily, and Bog rosemary.
