Notes
'Avis Varner' peony (Paeonia lactiflora 'Avis Varner') is a perennial for borders, cut flowers, and perennial beds. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and loamy soil. The deep red blooms are large, full double balls with no stamens. Stems are strong, and the plant grows about 35 inches tall. D. Steve Varner bred it, and it first bloomed in 1970.
Pairs well with Pale purple coneflower, Black Hero tulip, and Sensitive fern.
