Notes
'Bertha Varner' tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa 'Bertha Varner') is a shrub for borders, cut flowers, and perennial beds. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and loamy soil. The ruffled, semi-double blooms are lilac lavender with deeper rose-pink flares. They open in early to mid spring above low, dense branches. D. Steve Varner bred it in 1988.
Pairs well with Siberian iris, Elegans hosta, and Pink Impression tulip.
