Notes

'Black Magic' peony (Paeonia lactiflora 'Black Magic') is a perennial for borders, cut flowers, and perennial beds. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and loamy soil. Edward Auten, Jr bred it. Its single vermilion or violet-red flowers open in early summer and look nearly black. The color holds well in hot sun, and the plant grows to medium height.

Pairs well with Switchgrass, Stargazer lily, and Ageratum.
