Notes

Cedar elm (Ulmus crassifolia) is a tree for shade gardens, woodland settings, and low maintenance landscapes. It is hardy to USDA zone 6, or down to -10°F (-23°C). This plant likes full sun to part shade and dry to moist, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. The small leaves turn yellow in autumn, and you do not need to rake them because they compost nicely. Mourning Cloak and Question Mark butterflies use it for larval food. It is susceptible to Dutch elm disease.

Pairs well with Possumhaw, Beautyberry, and Magnus coneflower.
