Notes

Siberian elm (Ulmus pumila) is a tree for winter interest. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full sun and dry to moist, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. It grows fast and can reach 50 to 70 feet tall. Its reddish-green flowers open in spring, and it tolerates drought. Give it plenty of room because it spreads wide.

Pairs well with Jack pine, Buffalo grass, and Prairie dropseed.

Native range

Eastern Siberia, northern China, and Turkestan.
